SPRING DATES CONFIRMED: Personally Speaking Highlights Five Authors in 9th Season

Personally Speaking taps into the critical and imaginative thinking of UNC Charlotte faculty scholars, taking their scholarship beyond their classrooms to the greater Charlotte community.

Next season, the Personally Speaking series will present five published scholars from the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences who will lead conversations about books they have written and how they came to write them.

As in its eight previous seasons, Personally Speaking in 2018-19 will take its attendees into often unexpected, sometimes uncomfortable, but always interesting and educational stories that range from current politics to history to mystery.

“From its inception, Personally Speaking was designed not only to showcase our faculty and their scholarship but also to demonstrate the breadth of expertise they represent. Our faculty authors are known to tantalize, challenge and educate students, faculty colleagues and the public with their stories behind the stories captured in their books,” said Nancy A. Gutierrez, dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.

Two timely books relating to today’s political and governmental realities will kick off the season: In the first, historian David Goldfield looks at post–World War II when an activist federal government guided the country toward the first real flowering of the American Dream. The second book, by political scientist Mary Layton Atkinson, examines the reaction of the public when exposed to a seemingly endless and often contentious legislative process.

Each event will be open to the public without charge and will begin at 6:30 p.m. at UNC Charlotte Center City (320 E. 9th St., Charlotte 28202). Each program will be followed by a reception and book signing. Registration is required. RSVP here.
