When Drs. Mary Harper and Herman Thomas arrived at UNC Charlotte in the 1970s the winds of social and political change still lingered in the air. Hundreds of students were embarking upon educational and intellectual futures that were exciting but unfamiliar. Many were first-generation college students. It was Harper and Thomas who helped give them direction.
