German Scholarships Support 30 Students’ Studies Abroad

With the granting of $60,000 in scholarships from the German Language and Culture Foundation, 30 German majors from UNC Charlotte are studying in Germany this summer and in the 2013-14 academic year.

Each student received a $2,000 scholarship to undertake immersive language study in a German-speaking country at one of the locations of the prestigious Goethe Institute. Kurt Waldthausen, founder and president of the GLCF, presented the scholarships. He and Anabel Aliaga-Buchenau, associate professor of German and comparative literature, are instrumental in the partnership.

The number of German majors has almost doubled since the partnership with the GLCF began, increasing from 36 in 2010 to 67 in 2013. The number of scholarship recipients has grown from 8 to 30 in four years.
